Introduction to Hair Loss

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, refers to the thinning or shedding of hair from the scalp or other areas of the body. It’s a common condition that affects both men and women, and it can occur for a variety of reasons. The most common cause is genetics, with a hereditary condition known as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern hair loss. Other factors that contribute to hair loss include stress, hormonal changes (such as those related to pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid issues), poor diet, and certain medical conditions (like autoimmune disorders or scalp infections). Medications and treatments like chemotherapy can also lead to temporary hair loss. While hair loss is often a natural part of aging, understanding its causes can help individuals manage and potentially address the issue more effectively.

Types of Hair Loss with Distinct Causes & Patterns

There are several types of hair loss, each with distinct causes and patterns:

Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Baldness): The most common type, affecting both men and women. In men, it often leads to a receding hairline or bald spots, while in women, it causes diffuse thinning across the scalp.

Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to sudden, round patches of hair loss.

Telogen Effluvium: A temporary form of hair loss caused by stress, illness, or hormonal changes, where hair enters the shedding phase prematurely.

Traction Alopecia: Hair loss caused by tension or pulling on the hair, often due to tight hairstyles like braids or ponytails.

Anagen Effluvium: Rapid hair loss due to damage to the hair follicles, often triggered by chemotherapy or other medical treatments.

Cicatricial Alopecia: "Scar alopecia" is also called cicatricial alopecia; both terms refer to a type of hair loss where hair follicles are destroyed and replaced by scar tissue, resulting in permanent hair loss.

CCCA Alopecia: Also known as "central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia", and is sometimes referred to as "hot comb alopecia", "follicular degeneration syndrome", or "pseudopelade in African Americans" depending on the context; essentially, it's a type of scarring hair loss primarily affecting the central scalp area.

Each type has its own specific causes and treatment approaches.
